Website Benefits | Benefits Of An Ecommerce Website Design

An ecommerce website is a website with the capability of selling products or services.
The site will have a shopping cart and customers will be able to pay for the items with a credit card. Generally you will receive notification of an order placed to then fulfill the order. The customer will have had their credit card charged for the fee.
There are many advantages of having an ecommerce website over having a brick and mortar store. The obvious benefits are that you do not need to travel to and from the shop.
A person can fully own and operate an online website complete with ecommerce capabilities for around $25 to $35 a month. The fees vary, but it only costs around $10 USD a year to buy a domain name, then around the same per month for web hosting. The merchant company may have a monthly fee, but it is normally small.
With an ecommerce site in place the ability to reach millions of people are at your disposal. How many you can reach will depend on how you market your website.
You can use paid services, such as Google AdWords for pay per click advertising, or you may want to optimise your website for the organic side of the search engines.
Make sure the design reflects the type of ecommerce you are offering. You want it to appeal to your market audience. Is the layout easy to navigate, are the colors pleasing to the eye.
Next you want to optimize each page to rank well in the search engines. This means using the proper keywords for which you wish to be found. Make good use of the meta tags by including the keywords.
Use images and name the images with good keywords, because you can rank your images on the major search engines as well as the pages. Each page has an opportunity to rank high, so create each page with this in mind. Use social media to help get the buzz out about your ecommerce site.
The success of an ecommerce website design will be determined by how much work you put into it. Keep the pages
Check the website often to ensure the shopping cart runs seamlessly. You want your customers to feel secure about placing an order with your company.
If the website is set up correctly and optimized, it can be very successful for years.
Website Benefits | Government Plans To Withdraw Benefits From Convicted Rioters Criticised
August 19, 2010 by katmac

Two former welfare secretaries have criticised the government for floating plans to withdraw benefits from those convicted of rioting but not sent to jail.
Peter Lilley, who was the social security secretary in the last Conservative government, said he did not think it would be legal for the government to withdraw benefits from offenders in the way suggested by the work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith .
David Blunkett , who held the work and pensions brief and other cabinet posts under Tony Blair, suggested that the idea was an example of “irrational policy-making”.
Offenders who go to jail already lose their benefits, and Duncan Smith said on Monday that he was considering extending this principle .
“I’m at the moment looking to see whether or not someone who is convicted of a criminal offence but not custodial, that we would be able to impose a similar process on them as well, that they would lose their benefits for a particular period of time relevant to that process,” he said.
Duncan Smith seemed to be responding to a petition on the government’s new e-petition website saying “convicted London rioters should lose all benefits” . The petition has attracted more than 214,000 signatures, making it by far the most popular on the site and meaning that MPs will consider debating it in parliament because it has passed the 100,000-signature threshold.
In an interview on BBC Radio 4′s Today programme on Friday, Lilley said he did not think the government could withdraw benefits from rioters in this way under the present law.
He said that he thought it would be possible to order benefit inspectors to review claims made by people involved in disorder or criminal activity, but suggested the government should be careful about letting an e-petition dictate policy.
“The reason we have parliament is so we don’t have people signing a petition that then makes the law,” he said. “That can prompt a debate, and in parliament you get all these arguments. We can then point out the difficulties and the opportunities without a knee-jerk reaction.”
On the same programme, Blunkett also criticised the Duncan Smith proposal, saying: “Punishment and the issue of what we pay you to live on needs to be separated out, because otherwise we’re going to get in a real muddle.
“We’re debating irrational financial markets, irrational policy-making … I’ve got a lot of time for Iain Duncan Smith, but let’s examine what this would exactly mean.
“What we do with people who we don’t send to prison, hopefully, is to put more emphasis on restorative justice where, yes, they do get paid benefit if they don’t hold their job, but we expect them to do something for it. It’s the something for something that I’m interested in ” the proper conditionality that if you can work, you should work.”
In its response to the e-petition, the government said: “Prisoners convicted of a criminal offence and detained in prison are not entitled to social security benefits.
“That means that anyone who is eligible for social security benefits and who is caught, convicted and imprisoned for any offence committed during the recent disorder that has disrupted London and other UK cities will be disqualified from receiving social security payments.
“The department for work and pensions is also looking at whether further sanctions can be imposed on the benefit entitlements of individuals who receive non-custodial sentences. In addition, the department is considering increasing the level of fines which can be deducted from benefit entitlement.”
Although Duncan Smith has publicly floated the idea of removing benefits from offenders who are not sent to jail, he has also expressed reservations about his own department being involved.
“I am inclined to believe that it’s better if it’s done through the judiciary rather than done straight by the department itself,” he said on Monday.
At a news conference on Tuesday, the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, played down the prospects of anything happening quickly.
“We are going to take our time to look at this,” he said. “Of course you need to be proportionate, of course you need to be careful, of course you don’t want to create unintended consequences where the taxpayer ends up footing more of the bill or we create more social problems or problems of law and order.”

New website for jobless benefits
South Carolina’s unemployment agency is making it easier for jobless residents to get their benefits.
The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce announced Wednesday that the unemployed can now request payments, check their claim’s status and apply for jobs on a new website.
They previously had to either call or go to their local unemployment office to request benefits.
Agency spokeswoman Mary-Kathryn Craft says the online system, which has been in the works for several months, is designed to save time and money for customers and shorten lines in local offices. The goal is that employees will be able to focus on matching workers to available jobs, she said.

Local company wins government contract
The Pawleys Island-based Mercom Corp. won a government-wide acquisition contract that will allow it to get government work and expand.
The corporation was recently awarded the 8(a) STARS II Government Wide Acquisition Contract from the General Services Administration and the Small Business Administration, after working on the contract for about two years, said Larry Mercado, the vice president and chief operating officer of Mercom Corp.
The contract, which is almost like a certification, indicates that the company has been vetted and will make it significantly easier to bid on government contracts, he said. The contract enables the small business, which provides information technology and audio-visual services and products to commercial and public sector entities, to do more work for federal agencies.
“It was a major win,” Mercado said. “It doesn’t guarantee you anything, but it is a license to hunt. You have a contract vehicle, they [government bodies] prefer to use them in acquisition.”
The contract will undoubtedly lead to more work for the company and likely result in an expansion, he said.

Website Benefits | Can A Government Panel Calm Fears Over Fracking?
August 12, 2010 by katmac
There are many questions surrounding the practice of shale gas drilling”and especially the hydraulic fracturing methods used to get the gas. But it really all boils down to one issue: trust. Do Americans trust gas companies to drill in a responsible way and minimize the risk of any accidents or contamination? And perhaps more importantly, do Americans trust the government”state and federal”to responsibly regulate shale gas companies, and even stop drilling if it turns out that the environmental cost exceeds the potential benefits?
When I spent time in northeastern Pennsylvania in March for our cover story on shale gas , it became clear very quickly to me that trust was lacking in the towns most affected by fracking. People who had wells drilled on their property”especially those who later had problems”didn’t trust the gas companies to be honest about the potential risks, and they didn’t trust the state and local government officials to be on their side. The industry itself was of little help. Drillers generally refused to reveal theingredients in their fracking fluids”which only stokes public concerns”and their idea of communication seemed to consist of propagandistic TV commercials and relentless pro-industry websites . But they weren’t alone”some in the environmental community were willing to push the facts and take their own criticisms of shale gas drilling much too far .
More from TIME: Could Shale Gas Power the World?
What’s needed on shale gas is an honest broker, an institution that the public can trust. That should be the federal government”and after years of doing little to regulate shale gas drilling, Washington could step in just in time. That’s my takeaway from a valuable report on shale gas drilling issued this morning by an independent panel for the Department of Energy. (Download a PDF of the report here .) The panel”which is led by MIT professor and former Central Intelligence Agency director John Deutsch, and which includes environmentalists and industry representatives”covers both the fracking process itself, as well as the larger concerns surrounding drilling and gas development. And while the report largely endorses shale gas for its economic and potential environmental benefits, it calls for significantly more oversight than currently exists.
Video from TIME: The Fuss Over Fracking
From the executive summary:
The Subcommittee stresses the importance of a process of continuous improvement in the various aspects of shale gas production that relies on best practices and is tied to measurement and disclosure. While many companies are following such a process, much-broader and more extensive adoption is warranted. The approach benefits all parties in shale gas production: regulators will have more complete and accurate information; industry will achieve more efficient operations; and the public will see continuous, measurable improvement in shale gas activities.
Specifically, the panel calls for significantly improving public access to information about shale gas drilling”including the identity of chemicals used in the fracking process, something environmentalists and activists have demanded for years . The panel would also largely ban the use of diesel fuel in shale gas production, and would track both air pollution from drilling and disposal of waste water from fracking. (Each well can use as much as 5 million gallons of water, though much of it stays below the ground, and drilling companies are working on recycling waste water rather than disposing of it.) And the report suggests a comprehensive accounting of all the greenhouse gases generated during shale gas drilling”a point of much contention recently . (A study earlier this year from Cornell suggested that shale gas might have a carbon footprint largely than coal, though many critics believe that the its conclusions were flawed .)
More from TIME: Fracking and Cell Phones: Evaluating the Real Risks
Some of the more strident voices from both industry and the environmental community were unhappy with the panel’s conclusions and its composition”either too many industry representatives, or not enough. But for those in the middle”the members of the public whose trust needs to be regained”I think the report’s recommendations could go a long way, though there’s a big difference between making recommendations and seeing them carried out. Still, I think Michael Levi of the Council on Foreign Relations has it right :
If sensible people on all sides look past the fact that they don’t like everything in the report, they might even find the beginnings of a blueprint for compromise.
Before we can have a compromise, we need trust”and the Energy Department panel offers hope that there are people in Washington on shale gas we actually can trust.

Website Benefits | Benefits E-petition Hits 100,000
August 11, 2010 by katmac
An e-petition calling for rioters to lose their benefits has hit 100,000 signatures and become the first to be considered for a Commons debate.
It has dwarfed others on the government website, which has struggled to deal with the volume of people accessing it.
The petition has now been formally referred to a committee which will decide whether to hold a debate.
It comes as English councils say they will seek to evict social tenants found guilty of taking part in disorder.
The e-petitions website has been closed to address its technical problems and is due to re-open on Friday.
But the Cabinet Office, which runs it, has confirmed the e-petition submitted by Stephen Mains, saying “convicted London rioters should loose [sic] all benefits” has reached 100,000 signatures.
The threshold for the petition to be referred to the Commons backbench business committee, which can table debates, is 100,000.
Mr Mains’s petition has attracted vast numbers of signatures in just a few days. Its nearest rival, a bid launched by Conservative MP Robert Halfon to cut the price of petrol, was well behind it with 24,000 signatures on Wednesday.
Mr Mains’s petition argues: “No taxpayer should have to contribute to those who have destroyed property, stolen from their community and shown a disregard for the country that provides for them.”
If the backbench committee agrees to table a Commons debate, there is no guarantee the law will be changed.
The committee’s chairman, Labour MP Natascha Engel, quizzed Prime Minister David Cameron about whether action will be taken to respond to the petition.
She told Mr Cameron: “One of the ways in which ordinary people are trying to get their voices heard is by going onto the government’s new e-petitions website and signing a petition posted two days ago, asking for rioters to have their benefits withdrawn.
“How is the prime minister going to meet those raised expectations… that something will happen as a result of going onto a government sponsored website?”
Mr Cameron replied that the point of the e-petitions website, set up last week, was to “empower” people to make their voices heard on various topics.
“If it reaches a certain level of signatures it will be debated in this House whether we like it or not and I think that is an important way of empowering people.”
He added: “I think there may be opportunities, possibly through the new criminal justice and sentencing legislation to make sure we are better at confiscating things from people when they commit crimes because we have got to look at all the ways we can of making sure our punishments are robust.”
It comes as councils in Manchester, Nottingham and London say they will seek to evict social housing tenants who are convicted of violence locally and the government says it will consult on extending their powers, to allow them to punish those who travelled out of the area to take part.
A Cabinet Office spokesman said Mr Mains’ e-petition had been formally referred to Ms Engel’s committee, adding: “The e-petition is now eligible for consideration for debate by MPs and in the meantime, the government will respond to those who have signed the e-petition. It will remain on the site, and people will be able to continue adding their signatures.
“Under the procedures previously announced, it will be for the committee to decide whether an e-petition should be proposed for debate after the Commons returns from the summer recess.”
Other popular e-petitions include the campaign to retain the ban on capital punishment, signed by 20,000, which began in response to a less popular campaign to bring it back.
The most popular of the petitions calling for the return of the death penalty has been signed by 11,000 people.
Asked about the e-petition, a spokesperson for the Department of Work and Pensions said that, under current arrangements, “any benefit recipient who is convicted of an offence and is imprisoned, will lose their benefit entitlement”.
Mr Cameron, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Deputy PM Nick Clegg have expressed sympathy with suggestions social tenants found to have been engaged in criminal activities should be evicted.
But Labour MP Kevin Barron warned evicting people from social housing in one area – only to see them rehoused in another “taking that unacceptable behaviour with them” would not “solve the problems”.
Ministers have warned MPs not to “ignore” e-petitions although Leader of the House of Commons Sir George Young has suggested the threshold for signatures to prompt a debate may be raised if it is found to be too low.
Labour has said the petitions could lead to debates on “crazy ideas”.
The system replaces the previous e-petitions pages on the Downing Street website, set up when Tony Blair was PM. The most popular of these, with more than 1.8 million people in support, opposed road pricing.
Website Benefits | Verizon Strike Hits Westminster
August 11, 2010 by katmac

Outside the Verizon Communications Inc. offices on Main Street in Westminster Thursday, Frank Ridgeway and Steven Leferre could be seen pacing up and down the sidewalk for hours wearing signs of protest.
“CWA on strike against Verizon’s corporate greed,” Leferre’s sign read.
Ridgeway and Leferre, two local Verizon employees, are among the 45,000 unionized employees in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions who are on strike this week because of failed contract negotiations.
According to The Baltimore Sun , that number includes some 4,000 Maryland employees.
“We’re just fighting for our benefits,” Ridgeway said. “It’s the benefits that the company gave us when we started here, and now they want to take them away…We’re not asking for some big raise.”
According to Verizon , the corporation’s contract with those employees expired Sunday, Aug. 7, at midnight.
The contract covered approximately 45,000 wireline employees represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in nine states across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, along with those employees in the Washington, D.C., area.
“Today, most union-represented employees pay nothing for health insurance premiums at Verizon,” the company’s website states. “The company is proposing that its union-represented employees pay a portion of their health care premiums, much like the majority of other Verizon employees.”
The company went on to call the old contracts the “product of a bygone era.”
“Many of the provisions were written decades ago”long before the Internet and the mobile phone”when we were a regulated monopoly facing no competition, stringent rate regulation and guaranteed rates of return,” the company stated. “The contracts were never meant to cover a highly competitive landscape where profitability is no longer guaranteed, consumers are gradually shifting from landline to wireless phones and health care costs are skyrocketing.”
However Ridgeway and Leferre expressed frustration with the company.
Ridgeway, who is a cable splicer and who has worked for Verizon for 17 years, said he feels cheated by the system.
“My complaint is that the company I work for is profitable. Why is it that they had to take away my healthcare?” he asked. “It’s not going to make anyone’s phone bill go down. It’s not going to transfer to the customer. So where are those savings going to go?”
Leferre, who has been with the company 15 years, echoed those sentiments.
“Our CEOs already make millions,” Leferre said.
According to the men, the union has scheduled picketers on Main Street throughout the day.
Yet both expressed concern over how the continued strike could affect customers.
“I hope that we aren’t on strike too long. I know our customers need their service,” Leferre said. “I know cooler heads will prevail and that they will come up with a fair settlement.”
Since the strike went into effect, Verizon has released an official statement announcing the situation while stating that the company is trying to minimize its effects.
“We are confident that we have the talent and resources in place to meet the needs and demands of our customers,” stated Marc C. Reed, Verizon’s executive vice-president of human resources, in a press release.
According to the corporate website, in 2010 the company took in nearly $107 billion in annual revenue. In addition, it was ranked 16 on the Fortune 500 list in 2011.
Verizon employees 196,000 people, with 30 percent of its employees unionized.
